Hippo Home Insurance Review

Founded in 2015, Hippo uses technology to modernize the way consumers shop for and purchase homeowners insurance. Hippo forgoes the traditional use of insurance agents and agencies in favor of a sleek and seamless online experience. Hippo has not yet transitioned to an online claims process, requiring policyholders to call to file insurance claims.

Hippo home insurance is underwritten by two different companies, Spinnaker Insurance Company and Topa Insurance Company. Spinnaker services policies across all of the states where Hippo sells insurance, while Topa is limited to eight states (Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah and Washington). Spinnaker has significantly better customer service reviews than Topa, which means your customer service experience may vary depending on which company services your policy.

Hippo home insurance is available in the following 39 states and Washington, DC:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

  • Cheap home insurance

  • Not available in every state, and not available to all homeowners, even in states where Hippo sells insurance

How It’s Compared

Lemonade: As another company focused on bridging technology with insurance, Lemonade may be ideal for customers wanting to get a quote from a similar company.

Allstate: With its mobile app and expanding list of proprietary online tools, Allstate could be worth a look for customers who want to better understand their insurance.

Progressive: Progressive’s Name Your Price tool and online policy management systems could be a draw for tech-savvy consumers.

Bottom Line

Hippo home insurance is a great option for homeowners willing to install smart home monitoring kits that detect everything from break-ins to water leaks in order to keep rates low. It’s also a good choice if you’re looking to get coverage for your home office and electronic equipment without paying higher premiums.

However, Hippo doesn’t give policyholders the option to file and manage a claim online, which can be inconvenient. Also, policyholders receiving a loyalty discount from another insurer may find their current policy more affordable. It’s important to compare quotes from Hippo and other home insurance companies before making your decision.
